The apple is believed to be a native of southwestern Asia. Today there are 7,500 varieties of apples. The apple tree grows well in temperate zones with the largest producers being Russia, China, the United States, Germany, and France.

Golden Delicious: Pale yellow to greenish-yellow, firm, sweet, moderately juicy. Not for applesauce. Found in all regions.

Gravenstein: Yellow or green stripes with red, tart, crisp and juicy. Excellent for applesauce. Found on the West Coast.

Grimes Golden: Pale yellow, mellow, sweet, crisp and juicy. Found in the Midwest and Appalacians.
